McGraw-Hill says integrity is a "core value" of the Company; "It's what ensures the highest possible standards." McGraw-Hill says it adheres to "decency, respect, honesty and fairness in dealing with" employees (source). But you wouldn't think to use the word "integrity" in describing the way McGraw-Hill's KGTV has conducted itself since January 2006.
Channel 10 and NABET-CWA go back a long way. They’ve been together since KGTV first went on-air in 1953. Together they built a successful local television station. Together they have a history of working with each other to produce quality television, including local news, which makes a difference in the community. Together they created the area’s only local 24-hour NewsChannel and the first website from a local television station. They worked together to extend the brand with Spanish-language programming on Azteca America San Diego (Cable 15).
Now, for the first time in 55 years McGraw-Hill-owned KGTV refuses to negotiate a fair contract with its employees. Instead, KGTV went on the attack, hiring a union-busting law firm and turning on its own employees.
Since January 2006, McGraw-Hill's KGTV Channel 10 has:
• Intentionally created an impasse in negotiations
• Implemented changes against the will of the Employees
• Retaliated against Employees for supporting the Union
• Actively encouraged Employees to bust the Union
• Delayed returning to negotiations for over a year and when they did return, made proposals that were worse than the originals
• Issued repeated memos that "spin" the facts, misrepresent the facts, contain bad facts or contain totally false information
The National Labor Relations Board has upheld charges that McGraw-Hill's KGTV unlawfully threatened Employees, unlawfully attempted to intimidate Employees, interfered with lawful Union activities, unlawfully observed Union activities by shooting still photos and videotape of those activities and installed cameras to observe Employees without negotiating first with the Union. Channel 10 chose to settle those charges with the NLRB instead of defending themselves.
Please take a minute to email McGraw-Hill CEO Harold McGraw and Broadcasting Group President Ed Quinn and tell them to negotiate fairly with their employees. You can also call Harold McGraw at (212) 904-2000 and Ed Quinn at (619) 237-6212 and tell them to reach a fair agreement.
Meantime, please do not patronize the advertisers you see on Channel 10 and Channel 15. Through their advertising dollars, they support the station’s efforts to treat their own employees unfairly. Whether you are union or non-union, a fair deal is a fair deal.
